Anam Cara is proposing to build an $18 million, 20-bed hospice facility at Deakin University Waurn Ponds

The Coalition Government has invested $5 million into the project

I was delighted to join Deakin University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jane den Hollander, and Anam Cara House Chair, Diana Taylor, to announce plans for a new $18 million 20-bed hospice facility at Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus.

The Australian Government has committed $5 million to the building of the new hospice, which will be home-like and purpose-built to accommodate a range of hospice services and end-of-life palliative respite choices for people with life-limiting illnesses and the people who care for them.

I was delighted to announce this commitment with Prime Minister Turnbull prior to the 2016 federal election. The proposed site has excellent accessibility with ample parking and is close to the Princes Highway, the Geelong Ring Road and the Waurn Ponds Rail Station.

Anam Cara House is also working with Deakin University to create a partnership with Deakin’s School of Medicine and Faculty of Health.  The new building will provide a fit-for-purpose facility for Anam Cara House Geelong to help continue delivering a vital service to the region.

The not-for-profit, non-denominational, community hospice based in the St Marys Presbytery in Myers Street Geelong provides end-of-life care & overnight respite, day respite, visiting family and carer accommodation, equipment loans program for home-based care and community outreach home visits.
